The user can define a loading space by its internal length, width and height, and the planner keeps all cargo inside it.

Counts when: Documentation shows a loading space with user-entered or preset internal length, width and height that the planner packs within.

“These values represent the inside (loadable) dimensions of the vehicle.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=78

“In effect, MaxLoad Pro uses this information to build invisible “walls” representing the absolute parameters of the mixed-pallet load.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=118

Per vehicle record; English or metric. The vendor states there is no fit tolerance: an item that exceeds the space by any amount is not placed (PDF p. 47).

The user can mark a fixed part of the loading space (such as a reefer unit, wheel arch or corner casting) as unusable, and the planner keeps cargo out of it.

Counts when: A documented input for at least one obstruction with a position and size inside the space, which the planner does not load into.

“Truck Wheel Well » Distance From Front: Specifies the distance from the front of the vehicle location of the wheel wells.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=82

“The Advanced Tab allows you to specify corner boxes commonly found in sea van or containers. You can define up to four identical areas along the top area of the vehicle that will be unavailable for loading.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=83

Whether cargo may be stacked on top of a wheel well or under a corner box is not stated.

The user can block any number of box-shaped regions, each at a freely chosen position and size, inside the loading space.

Counts when: Documentation shows more than one blocked region per space, each with its own free position and size.

“Note: Enter the same distance for location 1 and 2 will give only 2 corner boxes; and combining the use of corner boxes with wheel well will allow you a define areas along both the top and bottom of the vehicle to be blocked off for loading.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=83

Only the fixed kit exists: up to four identical top boxes at two positions plus one wheel-well definition. The definition note names exactly this kit as failing. Multi-zone vehicles are 'Currently not supported' (PDF p. 77).

For a plan, the user can keep a set gap below the ceiling (or cap the load height below the internal height) without redefining the equipment.

Counts when: A documented setting, per plan or per equipment, that lowers the usable height or enforces a ceiling clearance, separate from the internal height.

“Minimum Ceiling Clearance: Minimum ceiling clearance is the minimum amount of air space allowed between the top of the cargo and the ceiling of the vehicle.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=95

The user can model a loading space whose floor or ceiling height changes along its length (drop-deck, step-deck, gooseneck, split-level), and the planner respects the steps.

Counts when: A documented input for at least one step in floor or ceiling height at a set distance along the space.

“Drop Off: These fields allow you to define a drop deck (goose neck) trailer, as the one shown here.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=78

The user can model a loading space whose cross-section is not rectangular, such as a ULD with a cut-back side or a rail wagon with a curved roof, and the planner keeps cargo inside that contour.

Counts when: A documented input that describes the contour (points, slope parameters or steps across the width or height), which the planner respects.

“Rail Wagon: Rail wagons have curved top which can be defined using the ceiling parameters.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=79

“(C) Width (Inside): The distance of second curve point from the end of the first curve point.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=79

Passes on the rail wagon, which is clearly a crosswise stepped profile. For ULDs the drop-off fields are defined as distances from the front wall, so which axis of the ULD they describe is not stated; the release summary's ULD illustrations (LD1-LD9, M-1H) were not visible in the extracted text.

The user can model a loading space whose cross-section is not rectangular and whose floor or ceiling height also changes along its length, both in the same unit, and the planner respects both. †

Counts when: Documentation shows a single space definition that combines a non-rectangular cross-section with a lengthwise height change, and the planner keeps cargo inside both.

“W Front Ceiling Drop/Outside Ceiling Width (rail Wagon) Distance Distance of ceiling drop from front of the vehicle (For Rail Wagon, this is the outside width of the raised ceiling)”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Tech/MaxLoad/MaxLoad%20v4.0%20IMPORT_AllData.pdf#page=15

The rail wagon's curved roof reuses the four ceiling-drop fields, so a lengthwise ceiling step and the crosswise curve cannot both be entered for the ceiling; nothing says the floor drop applies to rail wagons. ULD contours use front/rear floor and ceiling drops, i.e. one side view only. No single unit combining both is shown.

The planner treats a sloped contour face as a slope, so cargo can be placed right up to the sloped wall rather than stopping at a rectangular step.

Counts when: Documentation shows the contour defined by an angle, chamfer or interpolated points, and cargo placed against it.

“ULD Containers now support angled ceilings and/or floors”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20Release%20Summary.pdf#page=2

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=78
  • Evidence is a label in a screenshot

The vendor calls ULD contours 'angled', but the only inputs are a distance to the drop point and a drop depth, the same fields that define a rectangular drop-deck step. Whether cargo is placed against a slope or stops at a step is not stated.

The user can model one unit made of several separately packed sub-spaces, such as holds, sections, bays, a second deck, shelves or the two parts of a road train, each with its own dimensions.

Counts when: A documented input for at least two internal sub-spaces of one unit, each with its own geometry, that the planner packs as parts of that unit.

“Number of Bays: Selects from the drop down list the number of bays inside the truck, from 2 up to 32 bays.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=81

“Each section can have multiple shelves (up to 2). You can define the thickness of the shelves, where they start and end inside the truck, and how high they are from the floor of the truck..”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20Release%20Summary.pdf#page=3

The user can set a door opening smaller than the internal cross-section, and the planner does not load items that cannot pass through it.

Counts when: A documented door width and height input, documented as limiting what is loaded.

“» Door Width: For Side Cargo Door, enter the width of the side cargo door. Enter this value in inches or millimeters, depending on the Units selected.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=82

The only door dimension is the rail car side-door position and width, which sets where loading starts; no door height exists and nothing says items larger than the door are excluded.

The user can set which face of the space is the loading face (rear, side or top), and the planner builds the load, and any unloading order, from that face.

Counts when: A documented per-space loading or access face that changes how the load is built.

“Loading Railcar: Select an option – either Use 1/3 or Use Sidedoor – to specify how a railcar will be loaded.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=210

“For rail cars with a door located in the middle of the loading space, SKUs will be stacked from front and back towards the center”

https://topseng.com/maxload-smart-loading-algorithms/

The side-door choice is a global setting (Supervisor), not per vehicle. Side-bay trucks are modelled as bays, but choosing which side a pallet goes to is claimed only for the optional MPAS server.

On open-top, flat-rack or flatbed equipment, the planner can let cargo rise above the walls or extend beyond the deck edges, up to set limits.

Counts when: A documented open-equipment behaviour or envelope setting that allows cargo beyond the wall height or deck length/width, with a stated limit, used by the planner when placing.

“Maximum Overhang: This option is only available for flatbed trucks which allow overhang in the length dimension.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=96

When the cargo does not fit one unit, the planner places the rest in further units of an offered type and reports how many are needed.

Counts when: Documentation shows the planner adding units automatically until the list is loaded (or an available quantity runs out), without the user adding each unit.

“CalcAllTrucks: Activates the Calculate All Trucks feature, which calculates solutions using as many trucks (the same truck currently selected) as necessary to load a manifest.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=209

From several offered equipment types, the planner decides which types to use and how many of each, in one run.

Counts when: Documentation shows an automatic choice among two or more equipment types within one plan.

“MaxLoad Pro allows you to use multiple vehicles at one time. To do so, select more than one vehicle to be analyzed when calculating a manifest.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=93

“C Number Numeric Which truck should this vehicle be assigned to? If there are multiple trucks of SKUs, then this would specify that the vehicle was for the nth truck. Normally should be 1 for new manifests.”

https://topseng.com/Documents/Tech/MaxLoad/MaxLoad%20v4.0%20IMPORT_AllData.pdf#page=11

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=66

No numeric index. One step list on PDF p. 66 describes a 'Location' field as Light/Medium/Heavy for stacking, which conflicts with the 'Location (Not Implemented) front, center or rear' definition on PDF p. 55; it has no stated ordering rule. Heavy/light classes are otherwise stack codes in the matrix.

https://topseng.com/Documents/Software/MaxLoad%204.0%20User%20Guide.pdf#page=96
How it is done with general settings

1. Assign each group a stop-off (or priority) number per manifest line (User Guide PDF p. 106). 2. Set Maximum Priority Overlap to zero, documented as placing the next stop-off on the floor even when there is room on top (User Guide PDF p. 96).

  • Combination of general settings, shown by the vendor
  • Relies on a setting other rows also use; they may not all work at once
  • Only in some editions, plans, methods or equipment types

The dedicated Load Rule that 'prohibits mixed stop stacking' is marketing-only (Load Rules are TOPS-configured and unpublished), so it counts only as claimed. Zero overlap is broader: it forbids any lengthwise overlap, not just stacking.

How it is done with general settings

1. Pack items into a carton with a Tote manifest and save it as a Tote SKU (User Guide PDF p. 45, 132). 2. The Tote SKU appears in the SKU List, whose SKUs are 'available for loading into a vehicle, onto a pallet or into a tote' (User Guide PDF p. 104); add it to a Pallet manifest and save that as a Pallet SKU (PDF p. 123). 3. Load the Pallet SKU in a Truck manifest (PDF p. 45). The brochure states the tote-to-pallet-to-vehicle chain directly (brochure p. 1).
